This season Viyella’s womenswear channels simple elegance with a collection featuring clean design, subtle colouring and small-scale prints on luxurious fabrics for the epitome of elegant simplicity.

Fabrics on Viyella’s latest creations are understated yet stylish, with matte crepes, fluid silk and tweed knits offering wardrobe versatility; tucking, pleating and draping is used to maximum effect, further emphasising the fluent, feminine appearance of the clothes.

For casual wear, the focus is on the soft hand-feel of the garments; yarns are twisted and blended into jaspés and melanges; fabric surfaces are looped and brushed; velvet is tactile and corduroy adds depth of tone for pieces which are beautiful to touch.

Inspiration behind the Viyella collection comes from all over the world; garments incorporate Nordic fairisle patterns on delicate knits; ditzy florals and paisleys give a folkloric feel; and an Eastern influence is created with Chinese knot buttons and mandarin collars. The Oriental feel is further referenced in a strong colour palette of olive, damson and Atlantic blue, whilst classic monochrome is enlivened with garnet and Chianti reds, and a seventies colourway of graphite, navy and fuchsia also features in the collection.

Finally, prints, dogtooth, checkerboards and geometrics combine in an optical way and translate into coats, suits, print knits and jerseys, whilst the heritage checks with which Viyella earned its name underpin the collection on skirts and jackets.

Viyella’s classic creations began in 1784 when five Nottinghamshire businessmen founded a spinning mill in Pleasley Vale creating one of Britain’s oldest fashion brands. By the 1860’s the company had established itself as a producer of high quality yarns. In 1894 the famous Viyella cloth was born – a combination of soft wool and crisp cotton.

In 1960 the company received the Queen’s Royal Warrant and the Austin Reed Group went on to buy Viyella in 2009 to build on the core values of the brand and produce exciting contemporary collections.
