The Exchange Christmas Lights Event Saturday 21st November

The Exchange is Nottingham’s oldest shopping arcade, with its magnificent Grade II* listed buildings a spectacular sight at any time of year. This is doubly true at Christmas, when the centre is justifiably renowned for its beautiful Christmas decorations which look truly splendid in the centre’s rich Edwardian setting.
This year we have a brand new scheme for the arcade which goes up on Saturday 21st November - also the day of our popular Christmas Lights Event.
Visit the centre from 11.00am on the day and, as well as being amongst the first to see the new decorations, you’ll also be able to enjoy fabulous live entertainment and music including:
Incredible close-up Street Magic from the wizardly Roy Bond, who promises some jaw-dropping tricks and amazing sleight of hand. There’ll be a feast of festive music for the renowned Thoresby Colliery Band and the Beorma Singers to really get you in the Christmas spirit, and children will particularly enjoy the wonderful balloon creations & face painting. There’ll also be giveaways and sweet treats - so be sure to arrive early!
What’s more, you can also enter one or both of our fabulous prize draws for free.
When you purchase anything from any of the centre’s stores you’ll be given an Exchange Club Card. Simply fill this in and put in the box provided and you’ll be entered into the draws to win one of five prizes of £200 each in Exchange Shopping Vouchers or a fabulous Radley bag!
The vouchers are redeemable in all the centre’s stores and are the perfect thing for Christmas shopping, to give as a gift or even for a little self-indulgence.
The Christmas Lights Event runs all day from 11.00am on Saturday 21st November.

The Brazil Series by Bob Dylan at Castle Fine Art

Grande Árvore Beachfront – 2015

Favela Villa Candido – 2015
Wagon Master – 2015

Castle Fine Art are delighted to present The Brazil Series by cultural icon Bob Dylan. This important collection helps the viewer understand both Bob Dylan’s roots as an artist, and his vision for how he would like his portfolio to develop.
Following a sell-out release in May this year, this October sees the continuation of The Brazil Series by Bob Dylan.
The Brazil Series is an interesting departure from The Drawn Blank Series, and is a product of Dylan’s bravery as an artist. Never wanting to remain static in a single form of expression, Dylan is constantly experimenting and testing new artistic techniques. Today, Dylan believes that the Drawn Blank Series should not be regarded as representative of his art. He is more interested in directing attention to The Brazil Series; a rich body of work that he feels offers a more accurate reflection of his adventures within pictorial art.
Dylan’s life on the road has dictated a transient nomadic existence for the last fifty years. Truly, citizenship has little resonance for Dylan. He is indigenous to everywhere and nowhere, a member of the global community, a child of the world. In short; no roots, incredible wings.
Yet Brazil captured Dylan’s heart and mind during his many visits there, when he used his free time to gain an understanding and respect for the people and their culture. Dylan recognises that the country has every ingredient necessary for advancement: its population - fifth largest in the world - is relatively young, it has vast natural resources, swathes of available arable land and a growing profile. Moreover, there is no other country that manifests such change, such improvement, with each visit Dylan makes. This evolution, seemingly playing out in front of his eyes, combined with the hope and belief of the people of Brazil, has long intrigued and charmed Dylan in equal measure.
In an overarching sense, The Brazil Series is contextually relevant to understand both Bob Dylan’s roots as an artist, and his vision for how he would like his portfolio to develop. Here we see an artist who looks beyond the prosaic, ever searching for an angle, a point of difference, the unexpected and elusive, to elevate an image from a scene viewed as a passing glance or stolen moment, to an enduring work of art.
Therein lies the skill of Bob Dylan as an artist; he sees beyond the colours, shadows and forms of the world around him, he views the very fibres and grains of every object, person and setting, and is able to translate this perception accordingly to suffuse his art with the texture for which he has become renowned.

Exchange Magazine AW15 Edition Out Soon

The Autumn/Winter 2015 edition of The Exchange Magazine will be out soon. Free to pick up in the centre, it's also available to read online as well.

In this issue we talk to painter Bob Barker, one of Castle Fine Art's stable of artists, who tells us about his influences and inspirations. Yorkshire born and bred, much of his art is inspired by childhood memories of the mill towns he grew up around, depicted with a style and flair he has developed since first picking up a brush at the age of 12. Bob is also making a personal appearance at The Exchange's Castle Fine Art store in December, turn to Page 8 for the full story.

The Exchange is home to some great fashion brands, such as Dr Martens, Austin Reed, Jaeger, Radley and Karen Millen and in our style pages we highlight the latest trends for AW15 - whether you want to keep warm or look cool this season, there's something here to suit all tastes and budgets - whatever the weather! This issue's photoshoot really does kick up a storm, literally, as our models battle the elements to showcase some of the best fashion from the centre's stores. Head to Page 16 to meet theStorm Force.

Added to the latest accessories, covetous jewellery and great gift ideas, we also have a rundown of some of the best beauty products around to ensure you're fully kited out this season.

Wine importer, John Gauntley from Gauntleys Fine Wines, regularly travels on the continent to source his wines and certainly knows his Merlot from his Mourvedre. The same cannot be said when it comes to his Passé Simple and Subjunctive however. He relates an incident from his early career, when his limited grasp of the lingo led to an unexpectedly passionate outpouring in more ways than intended, as well as offering some choice options for some of the Rhone Valley's excellent wines. Go to Page 32 to brush up on yourLingua Franca.

iMag

This season sees yet another development for The Exchange, as this edition of the magazine will also be available to read on mobile devices via its own app.

A natural evolution of the digital issues which accessed from the Exchange website, users will now also be able to download a free app for Android and Apple products, as well as a Kindle-optimised version. In addition to an extended version of the current print edition, the app comes fully loaded with an archive of previous issues and will also be updated with The Exchange's digital Christmas Gift Guide.

Dr Martens A/W15 - The Spirit of Buffalo

Thirty years ago, photographer, Jamie Morgan with his friend and collaborator, Ray Petri showed up at the offices of street culture magazine, The Face, with a new editorial.
The pair had produced work for the magazine before, but this time was different - it was to be game changing. A black and white photo of an intense thirteen-year-old boy called Felix, with the eyes of gangster, stared out from the front cover - the word 'Killer' pinned to his hat. This, together with the models from the streets and androgynous figures that populated the pages, was the start of a style revolution; the killer image would become an icon of the era.
But Buffalo was about much more than style. It was an attitude and a way of life that emerged from London's post punk melting pot of cultures, tribes and individuals - the outsiders in Thatcher's Britain. These were people cast in the same mould, with the same attitude as the diverse, self-expressive rebels who first wore and continue to wear Dr. Martens. The name was inspired by underdogs, like the black infantrymen of Bob Marley's 'Buffalo Soldier'. It began as a collective of artists, models, photographers and musicians held together by the force of nature (and first person to call himself a stylist), Ray Petri. It became a turning point for the entire fashion industry.
Ray collided high fashion with uniforms, tribal costumes and sports gear. He collaged myriad influences but created distinctive, consistent looks of which Dr. Martens boots and shoes were a key component. Suddenly, a boy in a trench coat and boxer shorts or a sarong could look tough and empowered.
Fashion moves so quickly and yet Buffalo's influence is ever-present. This rebellious self-expression became timeless in its authenticity and cultural relevance - just like Dr. Martens. For AW15, Dr. Martens have taken inspiration from the Buffalo movement and it's styling. Technical fabrics have replaced traditional leathers and monochrome styles sit alongside rugged utility wear with bulbous toes and padded collars to mimic Buffalo styling.
To mark this 30th anniversary, Jamie Morgan, Barry Kamen and Dr. Martens have joined forces to create a contemporary interpretation of this pioneering and enduring style with a collection of striking images and a film documenting both the historic and modern influence of Buffalo and how Dr. Martens were an integral part of this enduring movement.
